Investigators looking into the recent Boston Marathon bombings scrutinized hours of video surveillance material in a bid to provide potential leads or evidence. However, one problem law enforcement authorities were confronted with - and have been faced with for some time, in fact - was the difficulty to match an individual’s face to a picture in an existing database, because of differences arising from movement, lighting or picture resolution, for example.
